Item Details

A very unusual Wedgwood pottery dessert service comprising twelve plates, two low comports and one high comport. Each piece has an impressed “WEDGWOOD” mark and the letters “CGZ”. This is the date letter coding system for the year of manufacture which is 1871. It also has a printed mark, in iron red, ”JOHN MORTLOCK 204 OXFORD STREET LONDON”, in a cartouche with a crown above, and a pattern number “9612”. It would have been made by Wedgwood for retail at John Mortlocks which was a purveyor of high end pottery and porcelain from 1746 to 1933. The service takes copies of botanical prints, which were first produced by Wedgwood, in 1815 in blue on pearlware bodies, but these are printed in iron red. Between the fifteen items nine different prints are used. This is combined with a moulded and coloured border. The low comports have ball feet with foliate details and the high comport has an intricately pierced pillar, incorporating a bamboo design, and similar ball feet. This is all typical of the Aesthetic movement of the late 19th century. The overall effect is quite stunning and all 15 pieces are in excellent condition.
