Item Description
A seventeenth century marble mortar with a later beechwood pestle. This is an unusual, and ornate, shape of mortar which is quite typical of the 17th century. The two lobes, and also the sides of the mortar, are nicely carved. There are three cracks to the rim and also wear to the carved lobes and the two pouring spouts. Otherwise it is in good condition. The pestle is turned from beechwood and is late nineteenth century.
Dimensions: Mortar: Width across lobes 20.5cm. Width across spouts 18.8cm. Height 11.5cm. Pestle: Length 19.2cm. Diameter 6.5cm.
