Item Details

A good quality, 18th century, English, Pratt Ware jug. The name Pratt belonged to a family of potters who were working at Lane Delph, Stoke, from the late 18th century. Very few known pieces are marked but the name then became used as a generic term for high fired, underglaze creamware and pearlware which used a particular range of colours. This jug is finely potted in pearlware and it is moulded with scenes titled “MISCHIEVOUS SPORT” and “SPORTIVE INNOCENCE” in heart shaped cartouches.There is a chain link band to the rim and acanthus leaves to the base and the moulded design is decorated in shaded of green, blue, brown, ochre and orange. The jug dates from c.1795. There is light crazing to the glaze overall and the rim has taken a small bump. This has resulted in a chip which hasn’t yet become detached.
