An eighteenth century Wedgwood, polished basalt seal impressed with Neptune riding his chariot across the sea. This is unmarked and it dates from c.1775. During this period Wedgwood produced the finest quality seals and, if the basalt or jasperware were polished, as in this case, they were very rarely marked and this was thought to spoil the appearance. This design in the seal is beautifully detailed, and superb quality, as one would expect from a piece of this period. There are three very small chips to the rim.
