Item Details

An eighteenth century, Wedgwood creamware hyacinth pot with enamelled colour. This piece is unusual in that it has escaped Wedgwood’s rigorous system of marking. However, it is illustrated in Robin Reilly and George Savage’s “The Dictionary of Wedgwood”, on page 105, and it dates from c.1790. The cream coloured earthenware pot is turned and the decoration is highlighted with a peach coloured enamel. The design and overall effect of this is quite charming. The base would have contained water and the hyacinths would sit in the cup shaped containers in the lid, with the roots reaching into the water. Sometimes, however, they are incorrectly referred to as bough pots. There is a small chip to the glaze on the reverse of the pot and the lid has some restoration. It is difficult to see exactly what has been done to the lid, as it has been done quite well, but there is still a crack visible on one of the holders and the glaze around this area is soft.
