Item Details

A 19th century wooden gesso mould. This is carved with a scrolling classical design which would have been used on picture frames. It is very deeply, and well carved, in walnut, and it dates from c.1850. At the base of the design it is incised with letters and a number. These are quite indistinct but could read “EC 2043” or “HC. BOARD”, depending on the angle and the way the light catches the mark. There are a couple of splits in the wood, which can be seen in the images, and there are a few wood worm holes, but none of this affects the design.
