https://www.thehoarde.com/dealers/appleby-antiquesA set of four, 19th century, hand painted tiles which make up the head of a bull. One of these tiles is marked “FLAXMAN”. Little is known about the Flaxman tile works. It appears to have been established by John Wade in Burslem in 1857, producing mosaic tiles. However, Terence A. Locket, in his book “Collecting Victorian Tiles” lists the Flaxman Tile Works as “Longton, c.1890-1930” and says that “no documentary record has been found”. These tiles are very well painted, with charm and character, and would probably have been made for a butchers shop. They date from c.1890. There is very minor chipping to the face of the tiles and two larger chips to the reverse of one.
Dimensions overall: 30.6cm. square by 1cm. thick.
