The lids to this type of pan were filled with hot coals so that the contents could cook slowly from both beneath and above. This, in effect, was the original form of slow cooker. This example is well made, from a heavy gauge of copper, and it dates from c.1850. It has castellated seams around the base and up the sides and the handles are all very rustic in form. There is very slight pitting to the copper, from use, but generally it is in good condition. The tinning to the interior is slightly worn but the piece would now make a very attractive bread bin.
