Item Details

A tall, 19th century, French copper stockpot, or water boiler, with brass tap and handles. This is stamped with a number “12” just beneath the handle on the side of the pot. Usually a number stamped in this manner would relate to the diameter but this doesn’t, as the pot is 23cm. in diameter, so it possibly relates to the capacity (12 litres), although I haven’t tested this. The lid is stamped “MAISON ARTHAUD 48 RUE ST. MARTIN PARIS”. Maison Arthaud was a notable 19th century manufacturer of high quality games, luxury gaming tables and specialised metal items for cafes and casinos. It is possible that this would have been sold by them or, alternately, it could have been used in their kitchen. The company was founded in 1864 and this piece dates from c.1880. It is well made, from a very heavy gauge of copper and it has castellated seams around the base and up the side. It is in very good condition but the tinning to the interior is dark and worn.
Dimensions: Height of pot 34cm. Diameter of pot 22.6cm. Width across the handles 33cm. Overall height including the handle 37cm. Width across the spout 32.5cm.
