Item Details

A huge, early nineteenth century, Sunderland lustre jug. This is decorated with various transfer prints which are then coloured with polychrome enamels. All of these are between bands of pink lustre and pink lustre swiggles. To one side are the farmers arms above the motto “GOD SPEED THE PLOUGH”. This print is by Dixon Austin & Co. Sunderland. Next to this, and slightly overlapping, is a Masonic print. Under the spout is a verse “A Sailors Life is the Life for me” and beneath this it is painted with the names “John & Mary Evrat”, so this would have been a marriage jug, given as a wedding gift. The other side has a print of a ship and another of the Iron Bridge. The Iron Bridge print is by J. Phillips, Hylton Pottery. This is a real documentary piece, not just as a marriage jug but also because of the use of prints from different periods in the Sunderland pottery history. J. Phillips owned the pottery from 1807 until 1812. It then became Phillips & Co. and Dixon & Co from 1813 until 1819 and didn’t become Dixon Austin and Co. until 1820. So this piece must have been made at the start of the Dixon Austin & Co period, around 1820, but using some transfers from the J. Phillips period of around 1810. Overall the decoration is quite amazing and the piece is in excellent condition. The lustre is still in very good bright condition. It is rare to find a lustre jug of this size, especially in such good condition.
