Item Description
A good quality, brass and steel milliners iron in the shape of a leaf. This is marked, on the side of the steel iron, with a number ”13”. Milliners irons were used for making felt or lace decorations for hats. The fabric was washed and starched and placed over the form. The steel iron was heated and this was then put over the form, and pushed in, to shape the fabric which would then be trimmed. The result was a beautiful leaf shape which would be used to decorate a hat or a lapel. This example is well made, has a turned mahogany handle with a brass collar, and dates from c.1900. It is in excellent condition.
Dimensions when the two parts are together: Length 22.2cm. Width 5.5cm. Height 5cm.
