Item Details

A rare pair of Wedgwood black basalt female figures depicting Scotland and England. These are marked “WEDGWOOD” to the reverse and they are titled “SCOTLAND” and “ENGLAND” to the fronts. They date from c.1860. These were originally designed as a set of three figures, the third being Ireland, and they would have been designed to commemorate the union of the three countries. However, they were originally produced in parian ware and I can find no record of them being produced in basalt. England carries an oval shield which is moulded with a figure of Boudicca carrying the flag of St. George and to her side is another shield with three lions passant. Scotland holds an oval shield with a male figure and the Scottish flag. To her side is a thistle and another shield with a single lion rampant. Both figures are beautifully detailed and they are both in excellent condition.
Dimensions: England: Height 31.5cm. Diameter of base 11.2cm. Width 12cm. Scotland: Height 31.8cm. Diameter at the base 11.5cm.
