Wedgwood based this shape on the early Roman oil lamps and this example dates from c.1820. It is marked “WEDGWOOD” and is also impressed with a letter “Y” and the moustache shaped mark. It is finely potted and the jasper has a very smooth texture. The lid is decorated, in white relief, with a central motif showing a boar being slain and around the rim are very tiny, and well detailed, signs of the zodiac. The base of the lamp has simple beaded borders. All of the reliefs are very good quality and the jasper dip is a rich shade of blue. Both the base and lid are in excellent condition.
