These usually come individually, and in a much larger size, and were use for holding the end of a leg of lamb whilst carving. However, these very small examples would have been used to clamp the end of the leg of a small bird so that you could pick it up to eat it from the bone. These are a delightful set which date from c.1880. The handles are silver, with an attractive Arts Nouveau design, and they are engraved with a monogram of the initials “J C”. The clamp section is silver plated as this is stronger than silver. They would be a very elegant addition to a table, when serving poultry on the bone, and they are all in excellent condition.
Dimensions: Length 10.2cm. Width 4cm. Diameter of clamp 1.5cm.
