Item Description

A large steel and brass milliners iron in the shape of a flower. This type of iron was used for making felt or lace shapes for ornamenting hats. The fabric was washed and starched and laid across the brass mould section. The steel follower was heated, and pressed into the mould. The fabric was then trimmed, leaving a perfectly shaped flower. Both sections of this example are marked with a number “439”. It has a turned, dark wood handle and it dates from c.1910. The collar is missing from the top of the handle and the steel shaft is slightly bent. Otherwise it is in good condition.
Dimensions when the two parts are together: Length 22.2cm. Width 8.1cm. Height 5.5cm.
