https://www.thehoarde.com/dealers/appleby-antiquesA very unusual, nineteenth century, French steel bread knife. The blade, which is shaped and engraved in the shape of a gnome or character from French folk law, is marked “DUGAL A CHATELLERAULT” and “DEPOSE”. Chatellerault is a French city and the name Dugal could relate to a manufacturer or the original owner of the knife. Depose means that this was a registered design but it must have been produced in very small quantities as we have never seen one before. The handle is carved from horn and this is attached to the blade with an ornate silver plated fitting. It is in excellent condition.
Dimensions: Length 33cm. Width of blade 2.8cm. Width of handle 2.3cm.
