Item Description
A Wedgwood Capri Ware tobacco jar and cover. This is marked “WEDGWOOD ENGLAND” and it dates from c.1900. It is also marked with the number ”3 1/2”, which relates to the diameter in inches, and there is a small impressed workman’s mark. Capri Ware is the name which Wedgwood gave to their designs which consisted of raised enamelled and gilded flowers on either a basalt or Rosso Antico body. It was first produced in 1815 and was based on Chinese designs which were being imported into England. The relatively small production continued, on and off, until the early 20th century. This is an unusual shape to find in Capri Ware and it is in very good condition.
