Item Details

A Wedgwood, majolica, game pie dish and cover. This is marked “WEDGWOOD” and it is also impressed with the three letters which would be the date code but the third letter, which gives the year of manufacture, is not fully impressed. It dates from c.1870. There is also an impressed number ’10’ which relates to the size in inches. The dish would originally have had a liner which would have been put into the oven containing a game casserole. When cooked it would be placed into the dish and taken to the table. As the liner is no longer with the dish the lid sits slightly high as originally it would have sat onto the rim of the liner. This style of dish was originally made from caneware but they were then produced in majolica when it became popular in the mid nineteenth century. This example is moulded with dead game and the lid has a rabbit as the finial. It is then covered in brown, green purple and ochre majolica glazes.  There is slight staining to the interior, from use, but otherwise it is in very good condition. Although it no longer has a liner it could still be used for taking a casserole to the table.
