Item Details

A beautiful coloured, 18th century marble mortar with a double ended pestle. The marble mortar originates from Northern Italy and probably dates from c.1760. This colour of marble, which combines red and grey can vary considerably due to the amount of red and this is a particularly attractive example. In the interior you can also see a tiny, fossilised trilobite. There is a small chip on the lobe with the pouring spout, and a further small chip on the rim, but generally this is in very good condition.
The pestle is turned from boxwood and the wood has a delightful, pale patina. It is stained on the ends, from use, and there are a couple of small cracks in the wood but these would not prevent it from being used.
Dimensions: Mortar: Height 16cm. Width across the lobes 30cm. Pestle: Length 32.6cm. Diameter 6.5cm.
Price includes postage within the U.K. Shipping to the U.S.A. add £100. Most of Western Europe add £50.
