19th Century Primitive Comb-Back Rocking Chair – North Yorkshire, c.1840

A charming and characterful primitive comb-back rocking chair, made from ash and sycamore and dating to around 1840, North Yorkshire. This fine vernacular piece features spindle arm supports, a thick one-piece sycamore seat, and distinctive cupid-bow mouldings to the comb. The surface retains remnants of its original paint, now beautifully worn and mellowed with age.

With its sturdy proportions and gentle rocking form, this chair embodies both the rustic utility and simple elegance of 19th-century rural craftsmanship.
