Item Details

An evocative early 20th C Flemish street scene by Belgian artist L De Gent depicting a historic alleyway with a Marian wall shrine, rich in atmosphere and architectural detail.

A finely executed Oil on Canvas signed "L De Gent" portraying a quiet Flemish street corner beneath a Timbered archway. The composition captures the intimacy of an old Catholic City probably Ghent or Antwerp with cobbled paving, aged facades and a distinctive Blue wall Plaque featuring Stars and a small statue of the virgin Mary illuminated by a hanging Lantern. Public religious shrines as this were common fixtures on corner walls and Alleyways in historic Flemish cities reflecting the devotional character of the region. The Artist name De Gent ("from Ghent") suggests a local Painter working in the late 19th to mid 20th C Belgian realist-impressionist tradition. The work is notable for its warm palette, confident brushwork and sensitive rendering of light and texture .
