A rare and highly characterful 19th-century cobbler’s bench, retaining its original leather straps and offering a fascinating glimpse into the working life of the travelling cobbler.


With its simple, functional construction and beautifully aged appearance, the bench has a wonderfully sculptural quality. Originally created as a practical piece of working equipment, its form has now become as interesting aesthetically as it was useful historically.


The survival of these benches is particularly remarkable. Many early cobblers worked an itinerant lifestyle, travelling from place to place to offer their skills and carrying their relatively modest working equipment with them.
