Item Description

An Art Deco Period  Walnut Desk By Betty Joel for Token Works 1938

A seldom seen and highly sought after Australian Walnut double pedestal desk designed by Betty Joel at the Token Works. The little framed label is tucked underneath the middle drawer. We were very fortunate to get our hands on this one and have sold several Betty Joel pieces in the past and this one rates high. Not only rather beautiful to look at but also very usable.

Like most of Betty Joel's pieces it's of course good from all angles and this one would sit happily in a room not just against a wall. We have a lovely design with an attractive break front with 3 top drawers sitting above a right and left flank of 2 deeper drawers fronted in cherry wood. The lower drawers have a file holder and on one side the middle drawer possesses a little internal sliding compartment, all very nice. The original leather insert sits well in a good light ochre colour with wear and the odd mark. The bottom plinth sits well in an ebonised veneer.

The desk sits firm with no nasty faults, the drawers open and close well, as they should. The deco inspired knobs are a historic replacement but work well with the piece. We have the odd nibble and knock but as mentioned nothing nasty or ugly.

A particularly handsome desk from Betty Joel, rarely available.
