 In the Victorian period companies such as Lawyers, Bankers,Solicitors etc, when sending correspondence the letter would be placed between the clamping bars and the handle pressed down, this would leave an impressed seal on the paper ( see close up) this would guarantee that the letter or invoice was authentic. today these heavy cast iron stamps are great repurposed as door stops.
