In the early 19th century a string of coral beads were all the fashion- as seen in the portrait miniature. 40cm in length string of 2mm beads. Red coral has always been highly prized and was believed to be endowed with mysterious sacred properties It is also a Symbol of modesty, wisdom, happiness and immortality.
