A striking mid-century modern oil painting by Jean Taprell Clark titled Figure in a Landscape.


Painted in oil on a Winsor & Newton Rathbone canvas board, a composition with a rich palette of olive greens, ochres, deep blues and warm reds. Confident, expressive brushwork and layered colour create a beautifully balanced modernist composition that exemplifies Clark's distinctive approach to figure and landscape.

Jean Taprell Clark (1930 to 1973) was a British modernist painter celebrated for her expressive abstract compositions. Having studied at Wimbledon School of Art, where she met fellow student Raymond Briggs, who would later become one of Britain's best-loved illustrators and the creator of The Snowman and Father Christmas. The couple married in 1963 and lived in Sussex.


Throughout much of her adult life, Clark lived with schizophrenia and agoraphobia, experiences that profoundly shaped both her life and artistic vision. Reflecting on her remarkable sensitivity, Briggs later wrote, "Schizophrenics are inspiring people. Her feelings about nature and experiences of life were very intense." Despite her immense talent, her career was tragically cut short when she died from leukaemia in 1973, aged just 43.


Following the release of paintings from her studio in recent years, Clark's work has attracted growing recognition and is now increasingly sought after by collectors of post-war and mid-century British art.
