The Swedish small glassworks of Stombergshyttan was owned and run by the Stromberg family for 2 or 3 generations on and off before eventually being taken over with others in 1976. They specialised in thick walled heavy crystal vases and bowls with polished edges with the first designs being created by Gerda Stromberg in 1933. Eric’s widow Asta is usually given as the designer of these later versions produced in the late 1950’s and into the 1960’s.
It’s unusual to find the large bowls as they won’t have sold in such numbers as the vases . Strangely the larger one is the lighter of the 2 as the glass isn’t quite as thick towards the base even though at the rims both are identical at 1cm. The larger one has perfectly flat rim, whereas the other has a slightly angled one.
Both have engraved Strombergshyttan marks with pattern numbers.
Lower one weighs just under 3.5kg 22cms diameter 13cms height. The other weighs 2.45kgs 23cms diameter 16cms high
Condition
No chips or cracks just some minor scratches if you look closely which you have to expect after some 60 years.
Notes
The designs may be simple, but to make them it takes tremendous skill to produce glass to this high standard, and today they would cost far more to make than the prices we’re asking.
