Item Description

Part of the artist’s fish and fowl series, this wood engraving shows an eider duck and eider drake over a stylised seascape with Atlantic cod underwater. As a technique, a wood engraving is similar to a woodcut, but carved into the end grain of the wood rather than along the grain, allowing for more detail. It is a very old printmaking technique not practiced commonly today because of the skill and time required. See-Paynton is one of the most highly respected contemporary British wood engravers, and his work centres on the natural world depicted in flowing compositions.
