Item Details

This large and flamboyant pair of rococo chenets, andirons, or fire dogs was made by French master bronze maker Charles Casier in the 19th century. They feature extensive baroque details, with an abundance of floral motifs and elegant curves. The form is striking at first glance, but also filled with spectacular detail throughout. Each chenet comprises six separate bronze castings and a cast iron leg, screwed and bolted together. This set was originally fire gilded as a work in ormolu, but only wisps of gilding remain so the surface is mainly polished bronze. Condition is excellent, as shown in the photographs. The chenets are free of dents and damage, and stand straight and square. They are marked in several places with the name C CASIER and Casier’s symbol of two interlocking letter Cs, as well as the number 29, indicating the pattern number. One of the cast iron legs is embossed with the number 46.
