'The Deliverer' by Louisa Corbaux, from the Exhibition of 1851

Lovely, faintly coloured lithograph of a Newfoundland dog being embraced by a small child

'Captain Bailey was an officer in India in the 1800's. He owned a Newfoundland dog called Bashaw

The story is told that one day when the Captain and his dog were in the company of a Maharajah his son was suddenly threatened by a large snake. The dog saved the boy by biting off the head of the snake and thus earning the eternal gratitude of the Maharajah who commemorated the event by commissioning porcelain figures of the encounter.'

These images were then copied in many versions on paintings, engravings and printed pottery

Lithograph first published by Stannard & Dixon, 7 Poland Street, London

Some slight staining on the paper, possibly cut down into a smaller frame
