Wording - Marie Antoinette never said "let them eat cake". The famous phrase actually comes from the philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau's autobiography Confessions. "Qu'ils mangent de la brioche". It was written in 1765, and Rousseau recalled a "great princess" who said that if peasants had no bread, they should eat brioche (a rich, buttery bread). When Rousseau wrote this in 1765, Marie Antoinette was only nine years old and still living in Austria, long before she became the Queen of France.
