Item Description
A great example of a folk art jig doll, probably made in England in approximately the late 19th century. It is made of carved and handpainted wood, with carved detailing to the face. It is in the form of a black man wearing a jaunty hat, a high collar and shoes with buckles. He is articulated at his hips, knees and ankles with the joints secured with metal pins, allowing for good movement in the legs. His arms are fixed, with his hands placed firmly on his hips. He comes with a metal display stand. He is in good condition with a little wear commensurate with his age and use.
Jig dolls are traditional folk art pieces, also known as paddle puppets, limberjacks or jiggers. They are loose limbed dolls that jig or step dance on a vibrating board, and were operated by buskers and street entertainers.
