Item Details

A matched pair of interesting African sickles or bush knives, dating to approximately the mid 20th century. The attractive beadwork on the handles is typical of the work of the Tutsi people of Rwanda, Burundi and Uganda. While small cutting hooks like these were made as serviceable tools to cut back grass and undergrowth in the bush, it is likely that this beaded pair were made in about the 1950s for the tourist market. The blades are made of wrought iron.

They are in good condition.

This interesting pair would make an attractive wall display.

A similar cutting hook is held in the collection of the Horniman Museum here.
