Item Details

A rare French faience absinthe pitcher made in France around 1900 to 1904. It was produced by Keller & Guerin at the St. Clément factory in Southern France. They made a number of quirky zoomorphic jugs in forms such as a cockerel, a cockatoo and ducks. This one, in the form of a Marabout Stork is one of the rarer shapes. It is made to dispense a perfect measure of absinthe - when tipped, the head and beak fill with liquid and, when turned back onto its base, the perfect measure comes out of a small hole in the end of the beak. 


It is made of glazed earthernware with naturalistic hand-painted colouring. The base bears the KG mark of Keller & Guerin, and the faint SC mark of St. Clément, both in relief, along with model number 431. 


The jug is in generally good condition with just small chips to the glaze round the foot-rim, a small, faint hairline by the handle, and minor crazing to the glaze. None of these faults really detract fom the appearance of this striking piece.
