Item Description
A beautiful little model of an Irish Cabin or croft, carved from bog oak in approximately the late 19th century. Bog oak or bog-wood is oak that has been buried in peat bogs for hundreds of years resulting in a dark coloured hard wood that is relatively scarce. Bog oak items were popular Irish souvenirs, particularly during the Victorian period. They are appealing little pieces of Irish folk art, and often featured Irish subjects or were decorated with symbols of Ireland. This example, of an Irish crofter's cottage is one of the more unusual subjects and is very nicely carved.
It is in good condition with minor wear commensurate with its age.
