Item Details

A beautiful large reclaimed red sandstone garden bench seat dating to circa 1860, full of character and striking presence. At approximately 1 .4m (54 inches) long, the substantial sandstone top has a wonderfully aged appearance that makes it equally suited to an established garden or to bringing instant maturity to a newly created outdoor space.

The reclaimed red sandstone has been hand carved and retains original chisel marks to some edges, giving the piece a strong sense of craftsmanship and authenticity. The bench seat rests on two short sandstone pillars, creating a simple architectural form with timeless appeal.

Naturally weathered over time, the sandstone has developed a lovely patina that enhances its age and texture. Its honest surface, scale and understated design allow it to sit beautifully within traditional country gardens, formal landscapes, courtyard settings or more contemporary outdoor schemes, including those inspired by the wabi-sabi aesthetic and its appreciation for age, imperfection and natural beauty.

Carved from historic UK red sandstone—the iconic, centuries-old bedrock of regions like Chester and Herefordshire—this reclaimed bench brings timeless architectural heritage into the modern landscape. Its deep, earthy tones and natural weathering create an instant sense of permanence and character that new materials simply cannot replicate. It is the perfect focal piece for introducing historical texture, rich colour and sustainability into a bespoke garden design.

Please note that the overall height of 63cm (25 inches) is the maximum height. The finished installed height may be reduced to allow the sandstone to be properly bedded into the ground during installation.

Also included with the bench is the small stone photographed beside it. This piece was cut from the right-hand leg and is offered as part of the bench’s history, accompanying it as a tangible fragment of its past on its onward journey.

A rare and highly decorative reclaimed garden feature, offering genuine age, craftsmanship and material character. As an original 19th-century piece, it provides a sustainable and visually compelling alternative to newly made garden seating.

Length: 137cm (54 inches)

Overall Height: 63cm (25 inches) maximum

The piece is free standing; however, due to its considerable size and weight, it will need to be professionally installed by a landscape gardener or builder. Mortar should be used to secure the pieces in place, with an adequate foundation prepared to safely support the weight.

Please note that red sandstone is a relatively soft natural material, and great care should be taken during handling, positioning and installation to help avoid chipping, fractures or surface damage.
