Item Description
A very unusual pair of ornate Victorian shop display cabinets dating from the 1870's, by Williams & Evans of Birkenhead. With a single glazed door to the front and glazed on one side forming an opposing pair of cabinets, painted in white and gilt with scroll carved decoration, the glazed door flanked by corinthian columns and with detachable white Carrara marble tops. The interiors with mirror backs, lined in velvet to the unglazed side and bottom and with three glass shelves.
The back of one of the cabinets stamped with makers mark for William & Evans, Cabinetmakers, Birkenhead, who are listed in The Furniture Gazette as being in business in the 1870's.
The cabinets would originally have been fitted into a retail shop which would explain why only the door and one side are glazed, the opposing side of each cabinet is lined in its original velvet but is unfinished on the exterior.
