Item Details

A fantastic example of a real rarity; this 1950s French, tin Martini menu sign / board has survived in fantastic condition and even includes an original, blank paper menu insert. The sign reads; "Martini - the World Famous Aperitif" - the Martini logo is embossed and there's a pictorial of a jockey sat at a bar, sipping a Martini - "according to Leon(?)". In the bottom left of the sign it states that it's "the mandatory display of prices order no. 19.480 of 23-3-1948" - this sign obviously produced so that the bars it was displayed in would conform to that 1948 legislation ... the sign itself is probably early 1950s and was produced by Vox Publicité of Paris who also produced a lot of the enamel Martini signage. This piece has remained in truly remarkable condition; aside from some very minor surface corrosion, mainly around the outer edges the litho printed surface remains bright and vibrant - there's a slight + gentle crease (see angled photo for a better representation of this) but generally the sign displays very well and can be hung using it's original string. It's backing card remains in place (though has slipped from the folded return in some places). Most remarkably of all, the sign remains complete with an original, blank menu insert. This also features the jockey pictorial, it has a patch of discolouration in the lower right and slight fading to the print but it's a pretty miraculous survivor!! The sign measures 49.5cm high x 34cm wide
