Item Details

This lovely 'Way Out' enamel sign comes from the Eastern Region (identifiable by it's dark blue background colour) of the British Rail Network and dates to the 1950s. British Railway's enamel signs are very iconic and combine simple, clear typography with vibrant colours and have their lovely rounded edges.

This sign is single sided - it would have originally been back to back with another sign of the same format so that it could have hung from the middle of the platform/station and been visible on both sides. It now hangs neatly against a wall. 'Way Out' is good, practical subject matter, perfect for use in a bar, cafe etc or simply as decoration.

The sign is in good, clean and bright condition. The gloss is very good (I've tried my best to show this in the angled photographs) and the blue is wonderfully deep. There's minimal enamel loss, with just a few chips around the outer edges. There is some surface scratching (only really noticeable under a raking light), likely the result of decades of regular scrubbing (think graffiti, chewing gum etc). This is generally par for the course with these rail signs and doesn't detract from the overall impact of this piece.

The sign measures 3ft / 91.5cm wide x 1ft / 30.5cm high x 3cm deep.
