Item Details

This lovely double-sided, hanging 'Gentlemen' enamel signs comes from the Southern Region (identifiable by it's green background colour) of the British Rail Network and dates to the 1950s. British Railway's enamel signs are iconic and combine simple, clear typography with vibrant colours and have lovely rounded edges.

What we have here is the increasingly rare, original presentation of this signage. Double-sided and hanging; it's made of two enamel signs complete with the hanging framework which is made from galvanised steel with a lead dressing. As it's more profitable to remove the two signs from their framework and sell them individually it's becoming less and less common to see a complete example. This one has survived the decades in good order too - both faces are in decent condition with just a small amount of enamel loss around the outer edges and a couple of small patches to the main face. There are some surface scratches and marks but nothing that detracts from the legibility or impact of the piece. Both faces retain vibrant colours and good surface gloss (see the angled photos where I've tried to show this). It hangs using the original loops, though it is worth bearing in mind that this is a weighty piece - just shy of 10kg(!) so appropriate fixings would be required.
Perfect for a shop/cafe/bar/restaurant where it can be both functional and decorative.

The sign measures 91.5cm / 3ft wide x 30.5cm / 1ft (35.5 inc hooks) high x 5cm deep.

Due to it's weight courier delivery would be advisable so please contact with the delivery address for an accurate quote.
