Item Details

This lovely, large (1.2m wide) 'Gentlemen' enamel signs come from the Southern Region (identifiable by it's green background colour) of the British Rail Network and dates to the 1950s. British Railway's enamel signs are very iconic and combine simple, clear typography with vibrant colours and have lovely rounded edges. This sign is single sided and would have originally been back to back with a matching sign so that it could have hung from the middle of the platform/station and been visible on both sides. It now hangs neatly against a wall. Perfect for a shop/cafe/bar/restaurant where it can be both functional and decorative. The sign is in good bright condition. The gloss is excellent (I've tried my best to capture this in the last photograph) and the green is wonderfully rich. It does have some surface scratching which is common with the decades of scrubbing it would have encountered. There are a couple of patches of enamel loss around the outer edges and two very small patches of enamel loss in the upper section of the 'M' - these have been touched in with a thick white paint and I suspect this 'repair' would have been done during it's time 'in service'. It certainly doens't draw the eye. This is the largest format that I'm aware of these signs being produced in and this is a good example of it's type. The sign measures 122cm wide x 30.5cm high x 2.5cm deep.
