Item Details

This anatomical model torso is made primarily from painted plaster, with a painted wood based. The model was produced by the German company SOMSO and is likely to date from the 1940s/50s. There is something fascinating and mildly macabre about seeing the inner workings of our own bodies - with SOMSO being a renowned and quality producer of anatomical models, this one has excellent detail and rich colours. Sadly this torso has been the victim of an organ harvester; it would have originally had removable lower organs, intestines and lungs - the fixing points for some of these parts are visible. However the heart remains and as well as being removable, opens to reveal very fine inner details. The condition of this piece is largely excellent, there is some chipping to the base and small markings to the outer 'skin'. The heart has a chip missing from the upper left area (see photos) as well as a couple of glued cracks - not immediately noticeable. The model stands 74cm high, is 45cm wide and 23cm deep.
