Item Details

"Attention sortie de voitures" translates literally to "Warning: Car exit" or "Caution: Vehicles exiting". These sorts of signs would be displayed next to the exits of parking garages and similar.


This particular example is double sided and competently hand painted / sign written onto sheet metal with a returned edge for added rigidity. Originally it would have had a couple of brackets allowing this to be displayed at a 90 degree angle. At some point in it's past, these have been cut off and a couple of small holes drilled in opposing corners allowing it to be fixed flat to a wall. A hard piece to date, I would put it c.1950s.


This sign has aged beautifully. For me, it's that perfect vintage look that just can't be replicated. The creamy background paint has darkened and discoloured around the edges, the painted letters have worn to expose the brush strokes that formed them. One side is more worn / faded than the other, both look gorgeous.


The sign can be wall mounted or looks well sat on a shelf.


It measures 50cm wide x 35cm high.
