When I first encountered this antique, painted grandfather clock face I was utterly puzzled ... Very precisely split vertically down the middle, one half is near perfect, the other half heavily crazed, worn and damaged... How? Had it ended up with half stuck into the ground? A freak chemical spill?
Then it dawned on me (a little belatedly) that it wasn't that only half of the clock face had worn, but rather than only half of a worn clock face had been restored; a demonstration of the restorer's skill - presumably for their workshop window. They were certainly a talented restorer - the 'good' half is exceedingly good; a smooth even surface with no evidence of the work done.

Since it's restoration, the 'good' half seems to have picked up a little damage around the 12 o'clock marker but as it's sat next to the heavily damaged side, you don't notice!

A great conversation starter and a nice piece with plenty of history.

It measures 28cm square and around 4cm deep.
