An utterly charming piece of turn-of-the-century signage, this sign for 'D. Butler' - the licensed tobacconist has been competently but naïvely painted onto a thick piece of wood that has been gently shaped with cut-corners. At some point over the years the background of the sign was re-painted in an 'aubergine' sort of purple (perhaps with a refresh of the shop) but rather than re-employ the sign-writer, the lettering has just been painted around ... I think this adds to the charm of the piece - all of the paintwork is of good age and shows signs of a life lived, it's dark colourway makes this a lovely infill piece of decor in an antique setting.

The sign measures 44cm wide x 18cm high x 3cm deep.
