https://www.thehoarde.com/dealers/ljw-antiquesIt's hard to capture on camera just how effective a technique this is. Reverse printed glass and coloured, crinkled foil make for an enticing piece of advertising that shimmers as you walk around it.
"Advertisements Received Here for Daltons Weekly" - a newspaper published in the UK every Thursday from the late 1860s through to 2011. Established by Herbert Dalton, Daltons Weekly was initially a single broadsheet listing 'Accommodation for Gentleman' in the then fashionable middle class suburbs around Vauxhall in South London. The paper proved very successful, but within two years of starting the paper, Dalton died, leaving it to his brother, who had no interest in publishing. The brother sold the paper to two brothers by the name of 'Hebert', for £100. For the next 102 years, Daltons Weekly remained a family business owned by the Heberts.
These glass and crinkled foil advertising signs are fairly scarce things - I suspect they were expensive to make and due to their inherently vulnerable nature few survive. This is one of two of the same Daltons Weekly advertisements that I bought together, I've never seen any other advertising for the paper...
I think this dates to c.1950s and is displayed in what is probably its original frame, it's in good, clean order and displays very well.
It measures 55cm wide x 43cm high x 1.8cm deep.
