Item Description
J. Lyons & Co. were best known for their chain of tea shops which opened from 1894 and finally closed in 1981, and for the Lyons Corner Houses in the West End of London. From the 1930s Lyons began to develop a pioneering range of teas, coffees, cocoas, biscuits and cakes that were sold in grocery stores across the world.
Here we have a double-sided enamel flange sign - designed to come out from the wall a a 90 degree angle; visible to people as they walk up / down the street. This is a nice, early example - likely to date to the 1930s/'40s and produced by Bruton of Palmers Green. It's survived the decades in decent order, there's some surface scratching and a little enamel loss around the outer edges, but the colours remain good and strong and the flange is present / functional albeit a little corroded from years exposed to the elements.
The sign measures 46cm wide x 30.5cm high with a 4cm flange.
