These slate-backed, reverse painted + gilded glass pub signs are perhaps the epitome of 'they don't make them like they used to'. The weight, quality and effectiveness of these are just fantastic.


This particular example is for 'Draught Worthington' and features a striking depiction of their white shield logo above three dimensional gilded lettering - the matte body of the letters being carved into the slate, the reflective outline being reverse gilded onto the glass - striking!


Worthington's, is a British brewery founded by William Worthington in Burton upon Trent in 1761 ... Interestingly enough, it's the second oldest continuously-brewed British beer brand, after Whitbread.


This sign would have been displayed in the doorway of a Worthington & Co. pub and dates to the early 20th century.


It's survived the decades in excellent order; a couple of surface scratches really being the only points of note. It retains it's original hanging fixings which are good and sturdy, the sign displays beautifully - though it is as heavy as you'd imagine a fairly thick piece of slate and glass to be and a couple of good wall fixings will be needed to display!


It measures 51cm high x 28cm wide x 2.5cm thick.
