https://www.thehoarde.com/dealers/ljw-antiquesIn the early 1800s, Jeremiah Colman began making mustard at a water mill near Norwich, England... Jeremiah founded Colman's of Norwich in 1814. From 1855 the firm introduced its distinctive yellow packaging and bull's head logo, and in 1866 was granted the Royal Warrant as manufacturers of mustard to Queen Victoria. (His Majesty's household still uses Colman's!).
This large (over 1.5m wide!) 'banner' enamel sign for Colman's 'D.S.F' (Double Super Fine) Mustard is dated to 1921 and has survived the decades in decent order. It retains its vibrant colours and a good surface gloss - so much so that it's difficult to photograph this wide sign without glare from the lights appearing (the lighter patches on the ends in the first photo - see angled photos for a better representation of the sign). As per the angled photos there are some patches where the surface gloss has dulled. There are some patches of loss and a couple of areas where corrosion has left holes in the sign (around the N + S of Colmans). All of this said, this is a large and impressive sign that makes a real statement when displayed. It's been attached to two wooden battens for ease of hanging but can easily be removed from these and attached directly to a wall.
The sign measures 157.5cm wide x 41cm high.
