https://www.thehoarde.com/dealers/ljw-antiquesIn the early 1800s, Jeremiah Colman began making mustard at a water mill near Norwich (England)... Jeremiah founded Colman's of Norwich in 1814. From 1855 the firm introduced its distinctive yellow packaging and bull's head logo, and in 1866 was granted the Royal Warrant as manufacturers of mustard to Queen Victoria. (His Majesty's household still uses Colman's!).
This large enamel sign for Colman's Mustard it dates to the 1930s and has survived the decades in decent order. The lower left corner has been lost there's enamel loss around the outer edges and a small scattering across the main surface of the sign, the blue border has dulled on the lower edge and the yellow background layer has some mottling (see angled photos where I've tried to show this in the reflection of the light). Having said all of this it's a sizeable, fairly early enamel sign - it's blue and yellow colour way remains strikingly vibrant and the blue enamel layer for the lettering retains a lovely deep gloss.
It displays well and is a real statement piece - perfect decor in a vintage themed kitchen / cafe etc.
As is often the case with these larger enamel signs there's a slight twist to the metal plate - it'd flatten out perfectly well with a couple of fixings top and bottom into the wall but in the meantime has been attached to two pieces of wooden batten for ease of hanging with mirror plates.
It measures 97cm wide x 91cm high x 2.5cm deep (inc. wooden battens).
